Ottawa eliminates women's basketball team from post-season

The Ryerson Rams played a hard game on Saturday night as they faced the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the OUA East Semi-Final. Losing 84-74, the Rams’ run for the OUA championship was cut short this year. However, they didn’t finish without a fight. They were close behind Ottawa until the last quarter, when the Gee-Gees took the steam with several fast breaks.

“Our offensive execution could’ve been better,” said Rams head coach Sandy Pothier.

The Rams rallied to edge Ottawa during the third quarter but some fouls put them at 58-55 by the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Gee-Gees scored more shots than the Rams in the final frame, closing in on their 10-point victory.

Leading the Rams, Lisa Goldring tied for the game-high with 21 points. Also scoring in the double digits were Lacey O’Sullivan with 16 points and five steals, Angela Tilk with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Jenny Hobbs who pulled 12 points for Ryerson in the second half of the game.

The biggest contender from Ottawa was Emilie Morasse, who scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Also leading the Gee-Gees was Kizzy Clarke, who contributed 19 points and four rebounds. The Gee-Gees did a better job at shooting the ball, shooting 51 per cent from the floor and 61 per cent from the three-point line while Ryerson shot 30.4 per cent from the floor and 22.6 per cent from three-point range. They also got more rebounds with 36 compared to Ryerson’s 26.

The Rams did well from the foul line, however. They shot 25 out of 30 compared to 23 out of 28 for Ottawa. They also had a bigger turnover rate with 17-6.

Although the Ryerson Rams didn’t make the finals, Pothier is confident her team will be ready next year.

“We just need a little more experience and I think we got it today,” said Pothier.

Ryerson went into the playoffs in second place but lost a spot in the OUA East Final, which will be played between Ottawa and Carleton next Friday.
